I'one thousand a big fan of Lorraine Heath'south Scoundrels of St. James series and although this isn't quite up to par with those, it'southward still a good read, and I definitely felt a connectedness to the characters and was emotionally invested in the story.

Lady Louisa might exist the daughter and sister of an earl, but rampant debt and elaborate spending habits take left her family's estate in fiscal ruin. To earn money and avert inevitable spinsterhood, she accepts the position of chaperone to the two daughters of the wealthy American Rose family and undertakes the challenge of finding them suitable, titled English language husbands.

The Duke of Hawkhurst, Louisa'south brother's best friend, is having financial trouble himself and begins a desperate, ruthless entrada to court and wed the eldest Rose girl, Jenny, to win her immense dowry, only Louisa is determined to forestall the scoundrel Hawkhurst from earning her accuse'southward favor. When a library rendezvous takes an unexpected plow, Hawkhurst finds himself in a forced marriage, just is it to the correct woman?

I liked Louisa and Hawkhurst, and they had a believable connexion. I never doubted that they belonged together, just I got really frustrated at times with the perpetual misunderstandings and their tendency to internalize everything. Although there is a HEA, I would take liked a scrap more than explanation and sharing between the couple once they finally admitted their feelings (and perhaps a fleck more groveling from Militarist) because it seemed a bit rushed and as well easily wrapped up in that regard. Overall it's a satisfying romance from Lorraine Heath, who has become one of my favorite authors. 4 stars.

This was a good read. It made me stay upwardly subsequently than I meant to in guild to read the decision, only I was left unsatisfied in a way.

This was a good read. It made me stay up later than I meant to in order to read the determination, but I was left unsatisfied in a way.

The couple is Louisa, the younger sis of an impoverished earl, and Hawkhurst, an impoverished knuckles and one of the earl's best friends. Their chemistry is believable and some of their dorsum story is very amusing.

You really wade through a lot of mercenary attitudes, though, along with one major machination past the hero that's difficult to forgive.

But in the terminate I definitely rooted for the couple and I'yard probably going to jump right to the side by side one in this brusque series.

I judge I was dissatisfied mainly because I felt the 'I love yous' came in identify of true reconciliation. Louisa had every reason to think what she did, but she didn't really talk over that in any way. At least there was a nice epilogue, although not as elaborate as Heath has been known to evangelize.

I've become a dedicated Heath fangirl, so I tin can honestly say I enjoyed this book. The conclusion could have been a bit more in depth, for my taste, though. But maybe that's only an addict wanting more than. Could be. ;D

I read this book considering I've seen the author'southward name come up repeatedly every bit recommended, and this is ane of ii titles the library had to offer me as an ebook.

I'thousand super glad that I didn't have the gamble of buying, considering I definitely was not crazy about this book. At commencement I just felt that in some fashion I couldn't actually articulate that it was non "well-written." Simply since I've seen scores of reviews claiming certain books were well-written (which I thought were boiled tripe with poor-grammar sauce), I thought I should at least be able to identify specifics.

ane.Errors that make me feel like the writer doesn't accept a house grasp of vocabulary make me crazy. This is one of those things that takes me out of the story. It pushes my buttons, I'll acknowledge, considering if there's ane thing an writer should have, in my opinion, it'south expertise in frickin' language.

This particular volume was far from the worst I've ever seen, certainly, only errors such every bit "eluded" when "alluded" is meant, or "fiercesome," a word for people who can't spell "fearsome"?

"Fiercesome" actually makes me feel like "She lol'd" is not far from actualization in future Victorian romances.

But while errors like this irritate me and reduce enjoyment, they're not plenty to say "badly written."

two.Characterization of secondary characters tends to be i-dimensional, sometimes absolute with decorative scarves. I'll explain. The mother who employs the heroine is a rude dragon. She is rude and dragonish pretty much all the time. Towards the very end, nosotros find out that she (view spoiler)[ is dying (hide spoiler)] which explains her urgency and I suppose is meant to make her seem more sympathetic, only since she is not actually in that scene, it is no more than than a scarf – an accessory, an reconsideration. Information technology doesn't really modify her or add together dimension. The hero's mother is melancholy regret, with a 'talent with flower arranging' scarf. The heroine's brother is all 'selfish ruthlessness' with a 'used to exist not so bad' scarf.' Either that, or it's just obviously inconsistent characterization. The sis of the hero is all innocence, all sugariness, all light. I actually can't think of what her scarf is. Notwithstanding, I've seen people refer to the way children are sometimes represented in romance as 'plot moppets.' I wish I could give appropriate credit, because if there's anything that this sister is, it's a plot moppet. (It doesn't help that moppet is the hero's term of endearment for her). She'due south 17, just sounds similar a nine-yr-sometime. A sappy ane. She has no thought why he might hesitate to give her a London Season, even though she'due south illegitimate. At the same fourth dimension, though, she is painfully aware of what a burden her illegitimacy is:

No ane wants to talk about … my situation. They think if they don't talk nigh information technology, and so my feelings will exist spared. Merely sometimes what is not said hurts every bit much as what might be said.
Cue the dramatic self-subversive action so that the guilt of the hero can be ratcheted up. Plot moppet.

three. The heroine is a dope. She has moments like this:

After [her married man] made dear to her once again, very slowly, he left her to see to his affairs.

As she stepped on to the terrace, she realized that until recently she would have thought he was talking about visiting other women, but she had not dubiety he was referring to the affairs of his estates.

Seriously? "Diplomacy" is the normal give-and-take for matters of business. What kind of moron would think for a nanosecond that a husband would announce to his wife, in bed, that he was off to take care of his multiple other women? (This probably really goes back more than to the writer's insensitivity to linguistic communication, merely still. She gave a whole paragraph to this nonsense.)

Other idiotic moments include (view spoiler)[ agreeing to get out her husband, go an annulment, and marry the son of her former employer (hide spoiler)], on the rationale that her scandalous reputation will not cross the Atlantic. OK, all the characters involved in this program deserve to exist called dopes, but the heroine is the i who agrees to put it into motion. Just seriously?? Are we to believe that all the Americans in England to snag prestigious spouses are not going to hear anything or bring the news back? That there wouldn't be anyone who would not meet her sleazy reputation as an opportunity to raise their own status by vehement downwards the status of the Rose family?

That'south just dumb.

four. The hero is a douchebag. As function of his plan to marry Jenny Rose, the American heiress, he decides to compromise her. Merely instead, the heroine comes in, and he bangs her in the library at a social event. Of class, they get caught. And, of form, information technology'due south her mistake.

His acrimony seethed only beneath the surface, acrimony at Louisa for coming to the library to begin with. If she had stayed away, his trousers would have remained buttoned, her skirts would have remained lowered. Just she had waltzed into the room, a temptation beyond measure. The fire in his claret had instantly boiled. Take her once and be done with it. Conquer and move on.

And notwithstanding he sabbatum there tonight wanting her more he'd ever wanted her.

He poured more than brandy into his drinking glass and downed it.

3 things. Offset, relating back to my first feeling most the volume – the quality of the writing – the fire boiled? Come on, writer. Secondly, the arraign event. What are you, hero? X years quondam? Third, the drinking. Not that I'thousand opposed to a tipple hither and there. Or even occasional outright drunkenness (woohoo!!), just this guy is constantly drinking whenever he's moody, and there's never whatsoever sign of effects – whether brusque-term or long-term. It's but a cliché in this book. In that location'due south one part in the book where he's especially moody. He fills "to the brim" and "downs" a drinking glass of brandy at least four times. Then he downs another unspecified amount. Unless those are Sherry spectacles, well, hello, alcohol poisoning. Does any of this inhibit his power to participate in a dramatic scene afterward? No. Does he accept a sore head the next morning? No. Of form, he does admit the whole "have you and be done with you" thought process, and so mayhap that's meant to be a sign of how his sentence is impaired. But I doubt it, because the scene simply doesn't read that way.

All in all, I suppose technically, I should charge per unit it one star, considering I really can't say I liked this volume. Nevertheless, it could've been worse.

This volume was a total snoozer for more than half of the book. The characters were sort of unbelieveable and the pacing and activity was repititious. This book was a total snoozer for more than half of the volume. The characters were sort of unbelieveable and the pacing and activeness was repititious. The plot was as well very jumpy and the hero was sooo not swoon worthy. In fact he was an insecure footling phleeb and combined with all of the other male insecure phleebs, I pretty much did not give a rat's ass about him saving his legacy.

Basically the plot is this. The sunday is setting on the skillful one-time days of the ton. Fortunes are in steep reject and the just way out for many of the "royalty" is to marry rich, contumely American heirs and heiresses to ensure a financially solid continuation of the line. This would be a pretty wonderful plot device only the beggardly manner in which the ton was basically ingnoring their personal Titanics and thier seedy and low rent way in which they approached scoring a wealthy savior was TACKY. I guess I could sympathise doing whatsoever i must to brand sure they are financially sound but the cheesey, lazy style the males in the book would consider their predicament was stoooopid. They scoff at piece of work, they belittle at re-imagining the motion from an agrestal to an industrial lifestyle just however they still are out buying bon-bons, keeping mistresses and holding balls. This element of the book really but stunk. The only character I did similar in it all was the heroine Lousia. She had more balls than the unabridged grouping combined and she best represented a forward thinking ideal. There were no connections between the principal characters and sexual practice was very perfunctory equally if the author saturday around with several chapter of the book pasted upwards and threw darts at where the scenes of intimacy will go.

I like Ms. Heath, and granted this book is a scrap old and maybe her writing way was developing but I have read her newer stuff and some of the same irksome element persist in her new works.

If you are looking for a keeper this book is NOT it. Endeavour Lorrain Heath's newer stuff and skip this one altogether

Well, that is a nifty read and I tin can't recall of better ending. I like the hero fifty-fifty in the first and despite the heroine's non so good impression of him. He does treats the women in his life with love and and so much devotion. But he kind of lost himself at the middle part of the story. I never idea he would say such cruel thing to the heroine in her face up when she's but concerned with him. I adore the heroine for having a brave heart! If I am her, I would gladly exit him and hope he would be happy without me (sarcasm). She's a adept person. What I likewise love with the showtime part of story is that the anticipation is present. I'm e'er waiting when he would compromise Louisa to the point that I tin can't put the story downward, well non until that happen. I was hoping it would exist in the eye of the story because I wanted to know how they would led their lives equally husband and wife. Fortunately, it did happened at the middle role merely unfortunately, the author has not given plenty glimpse of their married life. The Caroline thing became the focus that I call up where the story lost its momentum. It would be okay to include that if this is a longer story, unluckily it's not. Simply yet, I enjoy reading this story but non as much as I love other Heath'southward stories. It simply tells united states of america that the author may have a room for improvement at this time since it is written earlier than the good ones, she really did fill the room while improving and I think she needs some other room to put her excess learning if I'm making whatever sense. I actually l♥ve this author no matter what! That's my point. She is getting better and meliorate.
I promise the book 2 would not exist her brother'southward story. I withal can't like him considering of what he didto his very own sister! When one mistake leads to an unwanted spousal relationship between them, he blames her for their plight, although it was more of his anger and guilt speaking. He has an illegitimate sister whom he feels obligated and responsible to care for all his life, so information technology's no wonder he bears the brunt of shame for choosing his happiness (even if it'south not direct acknowledged) over his sister. While he's a good brother, I won't say that he's a spectacular married man but at to the lowest degree we know he tries.

OUR HEROINE is a very strong woman, who has had enough to depending on the elite and even if she's a Lady, she isn't besides proud to admit that their family was at present poor and she needs money. When she applies for a governess job, that requires her to match-make the heiresses with suitable husbands, she doesn't expect her blood brother, the Knuckles and a Marquess to all want an introduction for solely a selfish and quack reason - Coin. Louisa, being the proper English lady all her life having never experienced a suitor's kiss, passion or excitement finds aught to recommend of the three. While she becomes part of the heiresses' lives, she starts learning more most herself, wondering if she had no suitors because (autonomously from having no dowry), she was no fun to exist around with, she was too serious, too proper, besides everything and not exactly a breath-taking beauty as well. It'southward non clandestine to united states, the reader that she'southward been crushing on the Duke since forever. What cracked me upwardly virtually was how she caught Hawkhurst rutting with her own tutor once and thought he was strangling the woman to death. How embarassing! Simply, despite not being a fun grapheme, I practise respect the strength within her as a woman. Even though things turned to mush afterwards, she took in all in pace and even worked on her marriage with Hawkhurst. I liked the fact that she encouraged him to pursue his dreams, if not only for earning honest coin for the Duchy.

OVERALL I didn't think this hero deserved the heroine only, of class if y'all're a romantic, y'all tin ever view it as "Oh what will he ever do without her in that location to guide him, dearest him and etc?" But unfortunately, I'm non going to look at this with rose-coloured glasses.

The Knuckles of Hawkhurst is far from beingness the suitable admirer that Louisa hopes for her charges but he is desperate for money and decides that an American heiress is the perfect solution. Deciding on a plot to trap an heiress, Hawk finds himself in a bind when it's Louisa that gets defenseless.

I have to acknowledge that when I first started to read this story I found it quite wearisome. However it really picked up and turned into a really enjoyable, emotional read.

I liked that the writing made you believe the characters and really sympathise their changing feelings and emotions. I enjoyed both Louisa and Hawk as characters and felt the emotional connection the pair had. In that location weren't very many dearest scenes but the book was delightfully sensual withal.

This is the first book in the Rogues and Roses serial followed by Kate's story in Just Wicked Enough. I'one thousand hoping that in that location volition be more books to the serial soon.

Despite the tedious outset, I found this to be an emotional and romantic Victorian novel that I very much enjoyed and would recommend. iv stars.

I read this volume so fast and that'south just how much I enjoyed it.

The overall premise is very simple and the focus is more on the characters than building a overly dramatic plot that includes some sort of misplaced climatic event (merely who am I kidding, I do love a good kidnapping, duel, etc.).

What I liked: The fact that Hawk and Louisa have known each other for a long fourth dimension due to his long time friendship with her blood brother. Hawk'southward complete obliviousness to the fact that he is genuinely interested in

What I liked: The fact that Hawk and Louisa accept known each other for a long time due to his long time friendship with her blood brother. Hawk's consummate obliviousness to the fact that he is genuinely interested in Louisa, while also being aware of it, and desperately trying to deny it due to his (actual genuinely understandable need/duty) to ally an heiress. The barrack betwixt these two was hilarious and aw inducing equally Louisa attempts to set Hawk bated to concentrate on her job every bit chaperone for Jenny and Kate, and is as confused by his sudden interest. Louisa'south brother, and his ii friends assuming her new position volition help give them a leg up in winning over heiresses and learning only that i wants love and the other wants passion-- guess which sister they ALL make up one's mind to pursue? These moments with Lousia and the men were fun. Hawk'south determination to pursue work as a writer ( I wish this had been played up so much more than).

What I didn't similar: I do wish the history of the couple would have been played upwardly a lot more. The cut scenes of Jenny and her encounters with her mystery human being, which turned out to be not so important, could take been cut and simple referenced in favor of flashbacks to develop the history of the leading couple. I wish there would have been a bit more emotional connection in terms of Louisa discussing her disappointment equally not existence a success during her ain seasons on the matrimony mart every bit this seems to exist a big deal for her, and with Hawk'due south realization of having an interest seems to call for more of a word and make for an emotional scene.

Hawkhurst, himself desperately in demand of funds, sets his sights on marrying Miss Jenny Rose. The only problem is her chaperone, whom he can't seem to ignore.

In this book Heath tells a different story than she has in other novels. The protagonists honestly don't seem to get forth much at all, and neither seems very likeable. Both are very flawed individuals. Louisa is far as well judgemental and Militarist is too secretive. Although both overcome these traits, that doesn't come until the end of the volume and feels rather rushed. The end of the story leaves many characters' arcs unconcluded, and feels a scrap unfulfilling. Overall it felt the book was lacking in true emotion, which is a vast departure from many of Heath'south other works.

This volume only got good during the last twenty%. And even then, I don't think the hero fifty-fifty apologized for existence such an ass. Yeah, she challenged him with things having to practice with his family, but never for herself. All in all, the concept was the good, the 2 sisters Louisa chaperoned were cracking(!) only the execution was poorly done. There was too much build upwardly to the relationship shifting and when it finally did, it was as if all was forgiven and none of the bad stuff was ever said. My main problem was that he never actually apologized for always lamenting (yes lamenting!) that it was Louisa who went into the library, and not Jenny. ...more
